Dental Practice Accounting

Dental Associate Accountant UK

Dental associates occupy an unusual position - typically self-employed under their associate agreement, but with HMRC increasingly scrutinising whether the working arrangements genuinely reflect self-employment. Taxbix specialises in dental associate accounting.

Self-Employed Status for Dental Associates

Most dental associate agreements describe the associate as self-employed - responsible for their own tax and NI through Self Assessment. However, actual self-employed status depends on the real working arrangements: control (does the practice dictate how you work?), substitution (can you send a replacement?), and mutuality of obligation. Taxbix reviews associate agreements and advises on compliant working practices.

Self Assessment for Dental Associates

Self-employed dental associates must register for Self Assessment and submit an annual tax return by 31 January. You pay Income Tax on associate income after deducting allowable expenses, plus Class 4 NI (at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270; 2% above). Taxbix prepares and submits your return with all legitimate deductions claimed.

Allowable Expenses for Dental Associates

Dental associates can deduct: GDC registration fees, professional indemnity insurance, BDA membership, clinical training and CPD courses (including mandatory CPD), professional protective clothing, and a proportion of home office costs where relevant. Taxbix maximises your legitimate expense deductions each year.

Ltd Company for High-Earning Associates

Some high-earning dental associates choose to incorporate, taking advantage of Corporation Tax rates rather than Income Tax at up to 45%. However, the GDC has specific rules about corporate structures for dental providers - associates must ensure their company structure complies with GDC registration requirements before incorporating. Taxbix advises on compliant structures.
